How US self-employment tax works

Self-employed workers pay both the employee and employer share of Social Security (12.4%, up to an annual wage base) and Medicare (2.9%) on 92.35% of net profit. Half of this SE tax is deductible when computing income tax.

Quarterly estimated payments

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more, the IRS expects estimated payments four times a year. This calculator divides the total by four as a rough guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is this exact?

No, it is a simplified estimate. It ignores the additional 0.9% Medicare tax, state taxes, credits and other deductions. Consult a tax professional.

Do the default numbers change every year?

Yes. The standard deduction and Social Security wage base are adjusted annually, so update both fields from IRS/SSA sources.
